Connie DeMerell and her family have established the Dr. Dan DeMerell Memorial Fund at Camp Blue Spruce. Dr. Dan DeMerell was an allergist and a physician in the truest sense. Each day, Dan met with young patients and their families coping with the challenges of food allergies. He cared for them physically and inspired them to embrace full and barrier-free lives. He taught each of his patients how to stay safe when navigating social and school settings, and gave their families the confidence and reassurance to allow their children to participate.
In 2012, Dan offered his expertise, passion, and the resources of his practice, to help found Camp Blue Spruce, a worry-free summer camp for kids with food allergies. He was one the camp’s biggest supporters and advocates. As the chief medical advisor for the camp, he recruited other doctors to serve on the Medical Advisory Team and families to fill the very first camp slots. During the first year of camp, Dan met with every camper and their families at camp check-in and stopped by each night to learn about the day’s activities. He never stopped smiling even after the campers dunked him, fully clothed, in the swimming pool!
Camp Blue Spruce is honored to house the Dr. Dan DeMerell Memorial Fund in honor of one of our founders and greatest supporters. This fund provides ongoing support for the camp as well as scholarships for campers unable to afford the cost of camp.
With your support, Camp Blue Spruce honors Dan’s memory at camp each year. We remember Dan in the joy and laughter of the kids he cared about so much.
